Susan Millar, cello

Rising young cellist Susan Millar was the 2008 first place winner of the National Academy Orchestra of Canada’s Concerto Competition. Having been granted the Dean’s Merit Award, she completed her Bachelor of Music degree at The Oberlin Conservatory of Music, studying with Frances-Marie Uitti and Darrett Adkins. Susan received the Eva Heinitz Outstanding Cellist award and studied at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where she completed her graduate studies where she held the coveted position of teaching assistant to virtuoso cellist Eric Kim, Professor of Violoncello, Indiana University Jacobs School of Music.

Ms. Millar has held positions with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, and was principal cellist of the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic prior to her move to New Orleans. A champion of new music Ms. Millar and her guitar/cello duo ‘duoethos’ has commissioned works by composer Bayani Mendoza de Leon and has created her own arrangements and compositions. Ms. Millar has performed numerous solo and ensemble recitals throughout Canada and the U.S. and has worked with many notable musicians and ensembles such as Janos Starker, George Crumb, Stephen Geber, Kevin Noe, as well as members of the St. Petersburg and Juilliard string quartets, and the Trans Siberian Orchestra. In Summer 2010 Ms. Millar moved to New Orleans where she maintains a full teaching studio, and plays throughout the area as a freelance cellist. While she is conservatory trained, Ms. Millar also plays many non-classical genres.
